CCS Students to Create Public Art in The District Detroit

Ccs Check Thumb

The District Detroit continues to transform places and people’s lives for the better, now even more so thanks to a new partnership with Detroit’s College for Creative Studies to empower students to create public artwork.

Ilitch Charities and Olympia Development of Michigan are helping to fund a hands-on learning experience for CCS students beginning in January 2017. Through the unique new program students will work with faculty, community members and professional artists to design, create and install public art throughout The District Detroit.  Their work together will make a lasting impact on the exciting streetscapes and entertainment gathering places that surround Little Caesars Arena

Students will spend the semester exploring Detroit history, studying the lore of local sports teams, and hearing lectures from community members and artists – all to help inspire their artwork creations. They will create physical models of the works and documentation on their design intentions. At the conclusion of the semester, a juried process will take place to select up to four concepts to be developed into full-scale sculptures. Once selections are made, students will work under the guidance of a faculty advisor to partner with a third-party vendor to create the sculpture and manage logistics of manufacturing, shipment, site preparation and installation.

Through CCS’ Community Arts Partnerships (CAP) and community+public arts:DETROIT (CPAD) those who are a part of the program will engage with the community to take input and create works of public art that reflect the unique character of neighborhoods where they are placed.

Ilitch Charities is donating $350,000 to the fund the semester-long arts program and Olympia Development of Michigan is donating $450,000 to fabricate and install the student-designed artworks in The District Detroit.

It is anticipated that the students’ creations will be installed during the summer and fall of 2017 to be in place in time for the opening of Little Caesars Arena.
