District Detroit Holds Jobs Expo for City Residents.

As The District Detroit brings opportunities for Detroit residents to help build the new Red Wings arena, the demand for skilled labor is greater than ever.

City, community and union partners will work alongside Olympia Development to help prepare residents for these opportunities at The District Detroit Resident Career Opportunity Expo from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at Cobo Center.

“Olympia Development has said from the beginning, ‘we want Detroiters to build The District,’” said Douglass Diggs of Heritage Development Services, the organization ensuring contractors meet Olympia’s aggressive goal that 51 percent of the workforce be residents of Detroit.

Residents can register for opportunities online and fill out a skills assessment form at www.districtdetroit.com/jobs. At the Expo, they can meet with career counselors and members of skilled trade associations. They will also have the chance to learn more about training and education programs, financial aid, resume writing and interview skills, childcare, transportation, legal assistance and more.

“The scope of this project will make a real difference in a city that’s suffered from unemployment and underemployment,” says Pamela Moore, president and CEO of Detroit Employment Solutions Corporation, an Expo partner. “It is imperative that we hire Detroiters. In order to build Detroit, we must build Detroiters.”

The Detroit Resident Career Opportunity Expo will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at Cobo Center in Downtown Detroit. Free parking is available in the Cobo Center garage.
