SPOTLIGHT: Andre Hardy, Apprentice

After a few years of working in an office, Detroit resident Andre Hardy decided he wanted to change careers.

So, he enrolled as an electrician’s apprentice.

Now in his fifth year, Hardy is working with Motor City Electric, a Detroit-based electrical contractor with a 60-year history in the city, on the new home of the Detroit Red Wings where he works on power and lighting.

“It’s neat to see something come together and to watch the arena be built from start to finish,” said Hardy. “It’s also cool to be a part of Detroit’s resurgence.”

Hardy counts the Detroit Events Center project as one of the most important developments he has worked on, as it has afforded him the opportunity to play a hands-on role in Detroit’s renaissance story.

“What I like most about being a part of this project is that every day is different,” said Hardy. “No two days are the same.”

By September, he hopes to have earned his journeyman’s license at which point Hardy plans to pursue a Master Electrician’s license. Hardy hopes to one day start his own contracting company in Detroit to encourage and inspire the next generation workforce.
