Students Inspiring Students: Intern Finds Opportunity to Give Back

Helping kids with special needs meet their favorite players and play baseball on the field at Comerica Park has inspired second-year intern Kourtney Lots. Planning batting practice events and working with different baseball leagues has helped her fulfill her aspiration of giving back.

Lots is an intern for the Detroit Tigers in the Community Affairs Department where they focus on youth sports and player relations as well as helping with the Detroit Tigers Foundation, an affiliate of Ilitch Charities. She takes on the task of planning events for various baseball and softball organizations and teams. She’s made sure to impact as many people as she can before the end of her internship.

Lots is one of 24 interns from Cass Technical High School who are currently interning for the Detroit Tigers, Olympia Entertainment, Little Caesars, and other Ilitch Companies throughout the summer.

“I’ve always been interested in community service, so when I applied for this community affairs position, it really allowed me to experience what should be expected of me in this field,” said Lots. “It’s just amazing how the Ilitch family has fulfilled their legacy in serving Detroit.”

After graduating from high school, Lots plans to attend a Historically Black College or University where she plans to study physiology and criminal justice. With the help of this internship, she gained skills to help her in the future as well as learned what it takes to put a smile on the faces of others.

“I’ve always tried to make an impact in whatever I do,” said Lots. “Not only am I leaving my mark, but I’m leaving a positive mark for Cass Technical High School.”
