WEEKEND PLANNER: Lions and Tigers and Red Wings

Weekend Thumb
Weekend Thumb4

It’s the first weekend of Fall 2017 and we’re kicking it off big with home games at Comerica Park, Ford Field and Little Caesars Arena—all within blocks of one another and alongside new bars, restaurants and old haunts throughout downtown.

This weekend is jam-packed with Detroit Red Wings preseason hockey, Detroit Tigers games and the Detroit Lions first regular season home game and tons of comedy shows and concerts at the center of it all.

Fans can catch a show, a game (or two) and then grab a drink and some grub at one of the many new eateries in The District Detroit, including Mike’s Pizza Bar, Sports & Social Detroit, Kid Rock’s Made in Detroit restaurant and the District Market all inside Little Caesars Arena.

FRIDAY, SEPT. 22

The Detroit Tigers kick-off this busy weekend with the first of a three-game series against the Minnesota Twins. Followed by Saturday Night Live veteran and stand-up comedian Jim Bruer who will finish off the night with his “Marriage Warrior Tour” show at Sound Board at MotorCity Casino Hotel.

SATURDAY, SEPT. 23

More than 20 local breweries will highlight the first “Oktoberfest in the D” event beginning at 1 p.m. Get a commemorative pint glass, dance to the live DJ and grab some delicious culinary selections, including the Grillwich Tot Stop Food Truck, all happening at Hockeytown Café.

The Tigers begin their second game against the Twins at 6:10 p.m.

Then it’s Detroit Red Wings preseason hockey at 7 p.m. Saturday night at the new Little Caesars Arena. Hockey season hasn’t officially started but fans will get a chance to see a live game inside the Red Wings new home on Woodward Avenue.

Just as the Red Wings begin taking on the Boston Bruins and the Tigers resume their battle against the Twins, the Sistine Chapel Choir will prepare to take the stage at the Detroit Opera House.

Meanwhile, comedy fans will begin filing into the historic Fox Theatre for the All Star Comedy Festival, which is returning to Detroit after hosting a sold-out show in 2016. Comedian and former radio host Earthquake will emcee the evening, which will feature Corey Holcomb, Lavell Crawford, J.B. Smoove, and newcomer, Smokey Suarez.

Emmy Award-winning stand-up comedian and actor John Mulaney will open The Fillmore Detroit twice on Saturday for his successful comedy tour, “Kid Gorgeous.” The comedian and writer starred in the Netflix original film, “Oh, Hello On Broadway,” released earlier this year.

SUNDAY, SEPT. 24

On Sunday, sports fans will take over The District Detroit’s Wildcat Corner, home to Ford Field and Comerica Park for a Tigers-Lions doubleheader day.

The Lions will face the Atlanta Falcons while the Tigers close out their series with the Twins. But before the games get started, fans can join the first-ever Lions Pre-Game Brunch Party at 10 a.m. at Kid Rock's Made in Detroit restaurant inside Little Caesars Arena. The menu features an a la carte brunch menu and a build-your-own Bloody Mary bar, along with prizes.

John Mulaney will help end the exciting weekend for his third and final show, along with Greek singers Marinella and Antonis Remos, who will perform at the Sound Board at MotorCity Casino Hotel.
