Fitness Classes Are Plentiful in The District Detroit This Summer

Summer is in full swing, and sports and entertainment venues throughout The District Detroit are offering plenty of options to bend, spin, run and dance into shape this year.

Some of the fitness activities taking place this summer include a rooftop yoga series, pure barre, a festive salsa party and weekly spinning classes at Beacon Park. Notably, the Detroit Red Wings has begun hosting its inaugural Summer Yoga Series at Little Caesars Arena in collaboration with the St. Joseph Mercy Health System.

Here’s a closer look at what’s being offered in and around The District Detroit this summer:

Summer Yoga Series at Little Caesars Arena

Little Caesars Arena will host free yoga sessions for participants of all skill levels on the arena floor, at Chevrolet Plaza and in the venue’s street-level Via concourse.  A certified instructor will lead each hour-long session, which will all run from 6-7 p.m. Teachers this year come from various backgrounds, including former WWE wrestler Zach Gowen and local Vinyasa yogi Tommy Mack. The forthcoming dates are: Wednesday, August 8; Thursday, August 30; and Thursday, Sept. 13. Participants should bring their own water and yoga mats. Each session is open to the first 450 people who register.

Yoga at Detroit Music Hall
350 Madison St.
Local yogis looking to twist and pose to mellow slow jams and Hip-Hop grooves will find what they’re looking for during rooftop yoga sessions at Detroit Music Hall. The entertainment venue has partnered with the Detroit Yoga Lab to offer the unique activities this summer. Upcoming dates are: Rooftop Yoga Sunday Morning Slow Jams at 11 a.m. Sunday, July 22 and Sunday, August 19; Rooftop Hip-Hop Yoga at Sunset on Monday, August 20 at 8 p.m. Each session cost $20. Yoga & Outdoor Spin at Beacon Park

The spinning exercise craze has taken over, and Detroit is no exception. Build your quadriceps and work your heart during outdoor spin classes at Beacon Park, the public common built by DTE Energy and managed by the Downtown Detroit Partnership. Pulse Fitness, a local gym with locations in Detroit and Royal Oak, will run the free 45-minute sweat sessions for people of all abilities Saturdays from 9-10 a.m. through August. Juice and Fuel of Detroit will be on hand after class with bottled smoothies and juices for purchase. Spots are limited. Upcoming Saturday dates: July 21, July 28, August 4, August 11, August 18 and August 25.

In addition to cycling, Beacon Park will host free yoga sessions. An instructor from Living Waters Yoga of Grosse Pointe will guide yoga participants of all abilities on Sunday mornings from 9-10 a.m. Participants should bring a water bottle, towel and mat. Detroit-based Juice and Fuel company will be on hand after class. Sign-up not required. Upcoming dates: July 22, July 29, August 5, August 12, August 19, and August 26.

Monday Yoga & Tuesday Fitness at Grand Circus Park

Relax in the backdrop of historic monuments and the tranquility of a water fountain as The YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit leads outdoor yoga at Grand Circus Park. Located in the historic district next to Comerica Park, the park will host the free activity on Mondays at 5:30-6:30 p.m. The Boll Family YMCA building at 1401 Broadway St. will serve as a backup location pending inclement weather. Upcoming Monday dates: July 23, July 30, August 6, August 13

The historic park will also feature a different fitness class every Tuesday evening at 5:30-6:30 p.m. The free activities include spinning; High-intensity interval training, or H.I.I.T; Pure Barre and a football training camp-style workout using ropes, tires and balls.

Salsa Dance Party

The Detroit Symphony Orchestra, located just up Woodward Avenue from Little Caesars Arena, is offering more than classical music this summer. The venue will host a dance lesson led by award-winning Latin dancer and instructor Mambo Marci Friday, July 20 from 9-11 p.m. The event will be followed by an open dance floor featuring food, drinks and live music by Sammy DeLeon Salsa Band.
