SPOTLIGHT: Alexandra Castro, Detroiter, Cass Tech Student

002 Alexandra Castro

Like many high school students, Alexandra Castro was undecided about her future career path when she began a 9-week internship at Olympia Entertainment this summer.

But now, after being inspired by her colleagues, she aims to pursue a career in the business field, eventually working her way up to becoming a CEO or president.

Castro is one of 24 Cass Technical High School students who completed 9-week internships at several Ilitch Holdings, Inc. companies, including the Detroit Tigers, Little Caesars and Olympia Development of Michigan. Now in its fourth consecutive year, the corporate internship program gives students professional, hands-on experience working in various departments.

At Olympia Entertainment, Castro worked in Human Resources where she helped handle new hire paperwork, payroll and other related tasks.

As she prepares for her senior year at Cass Tech, Castro plans to apply for college and several scholarships and to branch out to learn more about career options.

“I want to explore other fields,” she said. “I don't want to narrow my options down too much, yet.”

After working in a corporate environment this summer, Castro has learned the importance of good organization and communication skills while working under pressure to complete tasks. She said her newfound knowledge can help her in her future career.

“Hopefully, one day I can return to the city and take part in a family business just as big as the Ilitch’s,” she said.
