SPOTLIGHT: Vanessa Edwards, Hoist Operator, Detroiter

075 Vanessa Edwards 720 X 480

Currently working at the Little Caesars world headquarters campus expansion jobsite, Detroiter Vanessa Edwards is a pro at moving heavy-duty equipment on construction sites.

She operates a painted-pink buck hoist, which glides up and down the nine stories of the Little Caesars world headquarters campus expansion site, and also operates everything from front-end loaders to bobcats to excavators.

Her role helps workers move equipment and travel easily throughout the new 235,000 square-foot building.

Edwards entered the construction field at the suggestion of her father-in-law. She went on to spend several years as a laborer before becoming an operator for Operating Engineers Local 324.

With construction industry jobs in high demand all throughout the city of Detroit, Edwards is taking part in shaping the city’s workforce for a new generation.

The good pay and the gratification of seeing projects come to life keeps her in the field today.

“It’s good to see a job when it’s done and know that you had a part of it,” Edwards said. “Work is so good for us construction workers now. Everywhere I look, I see cranes,” she said.

Edwards also enjoys being surrounded by all the new development downtown and in The District Detroit, which includes the Mike Ilitch School of Business at Wayne State University.

Slated for a 2018 debut, the $150 million campus will include street-level retail and link Little Caesars employees to the Fox Office Building high above Columbia Street. It will be the first newly-constructed corporate headquarters in Detroit in more than a decade.
