What’s Happening: Thanksgiving Day 2017 in The District Detroit

Thrilling new events will begin and decades-old traditions will return in The District Detroit on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 23.

Thousands of Detroiters and visitors will line Woodward Avenue to watch floats, high school marching bands, dancers, celebrities and special acts like the Distinguished Clown Corps for the annual America’s Thanksgiving Parade.

The parade has been a holiday mainstay in the Motor City since 1924.

The colorful spectacular will end just as the Detroit Lions take on the Minnesota Vikings during the team’s annual Turkey Day game.

The Detroit Lions began playing their annual Thanksgiving game in 1934 after the team’s first owner, G.A. Richards, moved the franchise from Portsmouth, Ohio, to the University of Detroit Stadium.

The parade, which will be broadcast live on WDIV-TV, Local 4, will commence at 8:50 a.m. at the corner of Woodward and Kirby Street in Midtown and end at Woodward and Congress Street near Campus Martius Park around noon. Retired WDIV-TV news anchor Carmen Harlan, who hosted the Little Caesars Arena ribbon cutting in September, will serve as this year's Grand Marshal along with Detroit-native and hip-hop star, Big Sean.

Last year, Detroit Lions fans enjoyed a 16-13 victory over the Minnesota Vikings at Ford Field. Football fans wishing to catch this year’s game live can purchase regular or standing-room only tickets here.

The parade and football game will be accompanied by several events, including two new events at Little Caesars Arena.

The District Market will host a Thanksgiving Parade Viewing and Lions Pre-Party beginning at 6 a.m.

The first-time event will give spectators a warm place to watch Detroit’s Thanksgiving festivities with breakfast fare and a variety of beverages. 96.3 WDVD-FM will stream a live broadcast and keep the fun going with music until noon.

At 8 a.m., the neighboring Chevrolet Plaza at Little Caesars Arena will host its first Thanksgiving Tailgate featuring games, a live DJ, food and beverages.

The holiday season is also underway at Fox Theatre. Check out all the amazing shows and events happening between now and the end of the year here.
